Parade 4

The band from Detroit was the best band in the whole parade. The black bands have a long tradition of high stepping and showy moves. It is not, in my opinion, a racial thing but rather a matter of tradition. When the movie “Drumline“ came out I thought about this Detroit band. I really liked the float with the carrousel because it was loaded with lovely young ladies.
The flowers in the thing behind the guy were Bouganvilla petals. They were glued on with horsehide glue. According to the woman behind me it smells really disgusting. The Frisian horses looked like they were counting the crowd. They were a beautiful soft coal-black.
While the Ivory Soap float was going by I reviewed my memory and realized that the only thing I ever used Ivory for was a carving media. Since I am a lousy sculptor it turned out to be a terrible waste of bad soap. I called the purple flowers “Flags“ and the people behind me went ballistics. The flowers are “Irises“.
A year later, having seen homeowner‘s insurance in Texas almost triple, I wish I had not cheered for this float. I guess the cheering encouraged them. The last picture shows that all manner of plant material if used for the floats. The judges are very picky about having surface completely covered.
