We had room service breakfast in the Chattanooga Choo Choo. Caro had a full breakfast but I was so anxious and nervous I just had a cup of coffee. As we were working our way to the Interstate to leave Chatanooga Caro said “That was cool. I wouldn‘t mind coming back here some day“. I almost crashed from the shock. I don‘t remember her ever saying anything good about traveling.

She navigated us onto the Interstate and then off onto a state highway. We kept searching the country side looking for “smoke“. Finally Carolyn spotted some and took this picture. I don‘t know where we were.

We drove through Maryville which looked like a lovely smaller city. She said “we take this highway until it dead-ends into this other road.” Thrue to my upbringing I panic and make the correct turn 1 intersection too soon. We ended up on a tiny, skinny, amazingly, narrow two lane road

Of course the cars with Tennessee plates are driving 80 mph while I am creeping around the sharp curves at 40 mph. After only a few miles I could only see the highway stripe and the edges of the road. Caro kept saying “Oh this is so pretty. The drop off is probably only a couple hundred feet.” Apparently she was faking it because she took no pictures during the mountainous parts. Reviewing the conversation in my mind reminds me of the chatter that Ricky and Lucy tried to maintain while pulling the longest trailer up the side of the mountain. That is one of my favorite movies.
Finally the road begins to level off and I only have to handle curves and gentle slopes. I could actually look around. The country side was apparently country but I couldn‘t see any evidence of farming. Saw signs of haying and cows maybe dairy but no crops.

We emerged from the “scream road” somewhere on the opposite side of Pigeon Forge from Gatlinburg. So accidentally we got a quick tour of Pigeon Forge. We were not impressed except for the breakfast type eateries. They all seemed right proud to serve pancakes!

The drive from Pigeon Forge to Gatlinburg is only 5 miles but it seemed much longer due to the curves. The road paralleled a mountain stream (river) that looked great for fly fishing. I was scheduled to arrive at the RAINBOW INN in Gatlinburg at 2:13 pm but like at Branson I kept driving faster and faster the closer we got to the Grannies gathering place.
