Distant Memory
Could it have been so long ago My mama said to me Go set the table, wash your hands Dinner's just about ready I'd run and call my brother He'd tell me, "In a while" "I think she's made a lemon pie." I'd say with a big smile The wind would blow my curly locks As I ran back to the house I only knew I'd eat and dream And never go without Those simple times were precious As I look back through the years Though mom's been gone a long, long time I feel the start of tears We're never too old to remember The child that used to be Oh mother if you only knew You were the world to me I light a fragrant candle It's lemon scent so sweet And hear my brother's voice imploring "Mama, please, another piece" Now this has got me smiling I think it's bed for me I think I'll blow the candle out And enjoy the reverie Karen Shaw Matteson © 2001 |
