A SHORT HISTORY OF MOTHER'S FAMILY TOLD BY OUR MOTHER

Grandma and Grandpa Gibson divorced before our Mother was born so she never knew her Father. Mother's Great Grandparents, Jonathan and Sarah Morris, founded the town of Morristown, Minnesota in 1855, Mother and our Aunt Sallie were invited to come to Morristown as guest for the town’s centennial, while there Mother met a relative of her Father and found out her Father became a famous doctor.

Sometime in 1864 Mama's Grandparents,Walter and Salina Morris, went with a wagon train pulled by oxen to Colorado. They were on the road for six months. While in Colorado, Indians set fire to front door of the log cabin. Her Grandpa got her Grandma, Mother and Aunt Sallie out the back window, After this they decided to return to Minnesota. One night when they were camped at Plum Creek, the men had taken the horses to water and, the women were cooking, some Indians came. One of them took her Grandma’s hair down and remarked what pretty hair the squaw had. Just then the men came back with the horses and the Indian Chief recognized her Grandpa and the Indians left. The Indian Chief knew Grandpa as when he had been a young man Grandpa had taken some of his people to draw their pay. Years later Grandpa had a store in Morristown, one day a boy came into the store and told Grandpa some Indians were camped by the river and they wanted to see him It was the Old Indian Chief who was now blind, he told Grandpa that they had planned to kill all of them the night they were camped at Plum Creek until he recognized Grandpa.

When Mama was four Grandma married Emri Heady and she always called him Papa. In 1893 they moved to Orlando, Oklahoma and lived in a tent with her Grandparents. In 1894 they moved to Topeka, Kansas and lived three years. Grandpa Heady worked in a railroad shop. In 1897 they moved to Eskridge, Kansas but only stayed a few months and then started to Utah in a covered wagon. When they got to Garden City, Kansas, they were told it was too late, they wouldn’t be able to cross the mountains, they turned around and went to Galena, Kansas.

In the summer of 1901, Grandpa Heady went with Mama’s – Grandparents to Oklahoma to register for land. None of them were lucky enough to draw a number, however there were some small tracts left and Grandpa got an 80-acre tract one mile north of Chickasha, Oklahoma. Mama and Grandma stayed in Galena and Grandma worked in a cafe to have something for them to eat. In 1902, Grandma, Mama: and her brother went by train to Chickasha to be with Grandpa. Grandpa had a job making bridge timber and posts for the railroad. In 1903 the town of Cement, Oklahoma was started and Grandpa sold their place and they moved to the east part of the town of Cement. After Grandpa passed away, Grandma went to Colorado with Mama and Daddy When they came back from Colorado, Grandma settled in a small house in the north part of Cement. She lived there until she passed away.

We speak of hardships, can you imagine the ones they experienced. We never knew Grandpa Heady, I am sure we all have fond and loving memories of our Grandma Heady. They were Pioneers and contributed so much to the development of our Country, leaving us a heritage to be passed down to generations to come.
