I WISH YOU COULD HAVE KNOWN DALE. YOU GUYS COULD HAVE COMPARED STORIES.

HE WAS 9 YEARS OLD WHEN HIS FAMILY CAME HERE FROM SOUTH DAKOTA. THEY HAD LIVED NEAR THE ROSEBUD INDIAN RESERVATION. HE PLAYED WITH AND WENT TO SCHOOL WITH THE INDIAN CHILDREN. HE LEARNED SO MANY THINGS FROM THE INDIANS AND NEVER FORGOT THEM.

HIS FAMILY WAS THE LAST TO COME TO AND SETTLE IN PAGE COUNTY BY HORSE AND WAGON. HE HAD SO MANY STORIES TO TELL. ABOUT THE TIME WE MOVED HERE THERE WAS A PAGE COUNTY HISTORY BOOK DONE ON THE RESIDENTS OF PAGE CO. THEY TRIED TO GET DALE TO TELL HIS STORY BUT HE JUST WOULDN'T DO IT.

BUT HE DID FINALLY TELL SOME OF THE STORY WHEN WE WERE ON A TRIP TO COLO TO VISIT HIS SON AND DIL WHO NOW LIVE NEXT DOOR TO ME (college Springs, IA). THEY VIDEO TAPED IT SO AT LEAST WE HAVE THAT.

HE MADE THE REMARK MANY TIMES THAT THEY WERE SO POOR THAT THE POOR CALLED THEM POOR. IT WAS ALWAYS SO INTERESTING WHEN WE WOULD GET TOGETHER WITH OTHER OLD TIMERS IN THE AREA AND TO HEAR THEM SWAP STORIES. THE HARD TIMES REALLY AFFECTED HIM IN MANY WAYS. ESPECIALLY WHEN IT CAME TO FOOD. HE ALWAYS WANTED TO BUY FOOD IN CASE LOTS, ESPECIALLY WHEN OUR KIDS WERE HOME. AND I WONDER IF THAT WASN'T WHY HE RAISED SUCH BIG GARDENS. HE TALKED ABOUT GOING TO BED HUNGRY SO MANY NIGHTS.

ANOTHER STORY WAS ABOUT NOT HAVING A COAT TO WEAR TO SCHOOL IN THE WINTER TIME. HE ROAD A HORSE TO SCHOOL. ANY WAY THE STORE KEEPER FELT SORRY FOR HIM AND GAVE HIM A COAT TO WEAR. I CAN'T REMEMBER WHERE HE GOT THE CAP, BUT HE SAID IT WAS SO BIG THAT IT FEEL DOWN OVER HIS EYES SO HE COULDN'T SEE. BUT THE HORSE KNEW THE WAY AND WOULD TAKE HIM TO SCHOOL.

THERE WAS A BARN NEAR THE SCHOOL AND THE OWNER WOULD LET THEM PUT THEIR HORSES IN THERE UNTIL SCHOOL WAS OUT. OTHERWISE THE HORSE WOULD UST GO BACK HOME.

HE ALSO TOLD ABOUT WHEN PEOPLE HAD NO FEED TO FEED THEIR HORSES THEY WOULD TIE A ROPE AROUND THEIR NECK WITH A NOTE THAT SAID "IF YOU CAN FEED ME YOU CAN HAVE ME". I AM SURE SOME OF THESE HORSES ARE ANCESTORS ON THE WILD MUSTANGS TODAY. DALE LOVED THE MUSTANGS!

BTW, DALE HAD A MEMORY LIKE A ELEPHANT. HE FORGOT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

WELL I DIDN'T MEAN TO MAKE THIS SO LONG. I HOPE IT DIDN'T BORE EVERY ONE TO DEATH.

I DON'T REMEMBER ANYONE TALKING ABOUT MY FAMILY SO I DON'T HAVE MUCH INFO ABOUT THEM.
